Volunteer Week 2021 Bridget KP Rose Gardens 1

Meet 21-year-old Bridget Talbot.

For two days a week, Bridget donates her time and energy at Kennedy Park Rose Gardens, assisting Napier City Council Rosarian, Jo Rhodes, with watering, feeding and deadheading the roses, as well as weeding.

With approximately 4,500 plants and 400 different varieties of roses, maintaining the iconic Napier gardens is not for the faint hearted. This doesn’t faze Bridget though, who is well accustomed to the outdoors having grown up lending a hand on her family’s Puketapu vineyard.

“I like being outdoors and working in the garden,” Bridget says.

“It feels really good to help the city and Jo’s good to work with too.”

The admiration is mutual between Bridget and Jo. Having managed the gardens for the past six years, Jo says Bridget’s company is welcomed in what can oftentimes be isolating work.

“Bridget is a charming young lady – very bright, bubbly and cheerful,” Jo says.

“I am impressed with her work ethic and the way she thinks about safety. She’ll do well in her life.”

So what is Bridget’s favourite rose? Tequila Sunrise… because of the scent of course!
