Dave Halliday – volunteer at Napier Citizens Advice Bureau

Volunteers Week Dave CAB June 2021 2

When Napier man, Dave Halliday, sought information from Napier Citizens Advice Bureau about consumer rights during a dispute with a retailer, he was so impressed with the volunteers there that he vowed to one day return as a volunteer himself.

Dave kept that promise and this year celebrates 12 years of voluntary service as an “Interviewer” for Napier Citizens Advice Bureau.

“Once I got involved it was quickly apparent that consumer matters were just a small part of the inquiries clients bring to the Bureau,” Dave says.

“We get tenancy issues, neighbour disputes, relationship issues, motor vehicle disputes, immigration inquiries, insurance issues, inquiries about WINZ, questions such as how do you get stains out of the carpet, and much much more.

“Just when you think you have heard everything about anything, something unexpected pops up. Volunteers are continually learning, and for me personally, I know my knowledge over a wide range of topics has increased enormously over the time I have been a volunteer.”

Dave says the most rewarding thing about being a volunteer at Citizens Advice Bureau is being able to assist people who are often stressed about a situation and at the end of their tether.

“We have an amazing data base to refer to, and to be able to research individual situations, and offer options for future action, is very satisfying.

“I also really enjoy the people I work with – the other volunteers. We are a diverse group that brings varying experiences and life skills together to help provide the best outcomes for our clients. Working with such a positive group is a pleasure,” Dave says.
