Café a shining light in a dark time

Adoro Harvinder Kaur and Manish Kaur

A lack of electricity, however temporary, has been one of the most widespread effects of Cyclone Gabrielle in Napier.

When the power went out at Adoro Café in the Napier CBD, owners Manish Kumar and Harvinder Kaur didn't let a little thing like a blackout stop them from serving up some delicious grub.

Despite being in the same boat as their customers, the team banded together to whip up whatever they had on hand and even went out to buy more pasta and instant coffee to feed the troops. They cooked what they could on a gas stove.

Their kindness didn't go unnoticed, as the community praised them for being the shining light in a dark time (pun intended). Kudos to the Adoro Cafe crew and their merry band of helpers for making the best of a bad situation and serving up some heartwarming goodness.

Manish and Harvinder have owned the European style Hastings Street café since 2021. They and their staff have continued the traditions started by its first owners 12 years ago, of making everything from scratch onsite.
